Developing Learner: Snow Globe Story Starter

Provide the materials as described for the beginning learner and help the children make snow globes. Encourage the children to use their snow globes as an inspiration for dictating a story.

Experienced Learner: Story Jars

Provide each child with an empty plastic mayonnaise or peanut butter jar; white confetti or glitter to represent snow; and small toys, people figures, or animal figures. Encourage the children to select several items and place them in their plastic jars. Have them fill their jars with glitter and water and replace the lid. Encourage the children to shake their jars to see the characters inside. Tell the children that the characters inside their jars can be inspiration for telling a story. Write their stories down to accompany the story jars.

Reflect

Say to the children, “Yesterday we learned about ice and the different forms that it can take when it is frozen. Today we learned about snow and all of the fun things that you can do while playing in it.”

Extend and Enrich

Use the following ideas to extend and enrich what children know about snow.

• Fill a clear bowl with colored water. Stuff a paper towel into a plastic cup and plunge the cup—with the open end down—into the bowl full of colored water. Hold it there so that the children can see that it is submerged. Carefully lift the cup out without tipping it and letting water inside. Show the children that the paper towel did not change colors and is dry. Encourage the children to repeat the process. What is happening? Answer: Air acts like an invisible lid, keeping the water from coming into the cup.

• Fill the playground area with starch packing peanuts to resemble a snowstorm. Invite the children to wear their snow boots outside to play and use plastic shovels and buckets to pick up the play “snow.” Try to use biodegradable packing peanuts, which will melt into the ground with moisture.

• In the winter when it is snowing, place a container outside and catch some real snow. Have the children use a ruler to measure the snow to determine how much has fallen in a given time period.
